Third Eye, Blind

I’ve been thinking a lot about intuition and insight these days. Intuition is one of those great life tools we all possess but we don’t all use. It’s the truth finder, the BS meter inside that helps us navigate our life’s experience. It’s the feeling in your gut or the tickle in your foot or maybe it’s the vision of your third eye. In the Eastern religions, the third eye is a mystical and esoteric concept of a speculative invisible eye, usually depicted as located on the forehead, which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. (Wikipedia)  Use of your third eye can allow one deep spiritual intuition and insight through meditation and other means of spiritual practice. It’s even believed the third eye can be opened. For many, though, the third eye never opens or is even acknowledged. It is regarded as New Age superstition and disregarded by many other western standards. For many whether by choice or not, their third eye is blind.

At this moment, my husband and I are deep into an Apple TV series called “See” (spoiler alert!). It’s an intriguing premise. In the 21st century (yes, now!!) a devastating virus wipes out most of mankind. Those who survive are left blind. The blindness carries over for generations and it is an inventive imagining of how humans adapt without vision. Life seems fine until a set of twins are born in a remote village…who can see. This series has had me thinking a lot about sight and insight. I cannot imagine not being able to see. Just the volume of books and printed materials I devour in a month would be an enormous loss but also watching television and movies, driving, writing, all those things I take for granted would be lost. And yet those who have lost their sight live full productive lives and their other senses become even sharper because those are the ones they must depend on.

In the case of the third eye, it’s a matter of seeing beyond the images in front of you. It’s your intuition at work, it’s feeling things that might be there but you can’t see. I confess that when my kids were growing, I had lots of gut feelings about what might be going on with them in school or in their social group or with their health but in many cases, I chose to ignore it because I was afraid of the truth. I would just shake it off as paranoia. Sometimes it’s easier to be blind. But that just puts off the inevitable truth about a situation, making it harder to accept. So I’ve had to work diligently to get back to trusting my intuition.

In Jackson Browne’s classic hit, Doctor, My Eyes, Jackson wonders if he has been unwise to keep his eyes open for such a long time because now he is trying to make sense of the good and evil he sees in the world. I love the concept that equates open eyes with acquiring knowledge. Back to a scene in the series “See” the village’s wise woman chides one of the twins, saying they might have the gift of sight but they can’t see what is happening around them. Their third eye is blind.

We live in interesting times right now because we are being asked outright by many in high places to deny what is in front of our eyes. There are those that are choosing blindness, choosing to paint a different picture in their minds than the one that is presented. There is so much danger in this kind of blindness. It takes courage to see. It takes courage to tell the Emperor he is naked even as he believes he is richly robed in new clothes. It takes courage to speak out when we see injustice, hate, bullying, and violence. I’ve always wondered why the image of Lady Justice had a blindfold on. Supposedly it is so whoever seeks justice will be treated impartially and objectively. Sadly, I believe justice is blind but not in the way that was meant to be. It can be easy to choose what to see.

One of my favorite 90s band call themselves Third Eye Blind and it was that name that inspired me on this path of weighing what sight and blindness can mean. I’ve always loved the line in their song Semi-Charmed Life that claims the singer wants something else to get through his semi-charmed kind of life as if he can’t see how magical his life really is although he does admit it is charmed, if only partially. I have to believe that life is as charmed as we allow it to be. But there is no doubt. Life is hard. It’s complicated. It’s wondrous and beautiful. But we can only get the very most out of it if we come at it with eyes wide open.

Today there are so many ways to fool what our eyes can see. People can remake themselves on social media to present who they want to be and not who they really are. They are blind even to their own true nature. Monsters can dress in the finest of clothes and kind hearts can be clothed in rags but how we see them can deceive us. We all must work on our intuition, our third eye to seek the truth. As the adage for revenge goes, an eye for an eye just makes us all blind. And that is no way to look to the future.

My head spins with all of the levels of intuition you bring up Tina! Thank you! I didn’t know anyone else was listening to intuition any more.
First, how we have been trained as women to disregard and think silly of our instincts and gut knowledge. This has left us unsafe in many ways. And the prejudice and discrimination that could be avoided if we didn’t actually have sight…as horrible as it seems, imagine!
The refusal and fear some have to see what is right in front of us (The Emperor).
We still have a long journey ahead of us (again) to convince people to find and listen to the 3rd eye, rather than the influence of statisics, media and fear.
Bless you for celebrating intuition as a survival skill with us!! It can lead the way back to balance. kb

KB, so very true. I believe it is a survival skill and one we negate all too often. Balance is the key! I love your insights here, thank you xoxo

  5. This was a really good read. While I am a firm believer in the concept of intuition, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always listen. It’s something that I am trying to work on. After all, the times that I choose not to listen, those are the times that I end up paying for it.

Isn’t that the truth? I am finding that myself so I am really working on the listening part. Thank you!

Thank you for this post. It’s fascinating.
One of my workmates once told me he had the third eye open or at least that’s what he was told by an eastern thinker he met. He told me a story that he was driving at night through a woods and suddenly he felt he must slow down. The next second a huge boar ran on the road just in front of him. If he hadn’t slowed down, he’d hit the animal and probably destroy his car.
And I wanted to add that it’s so true that we are told not to believe our own eyes. It is sad to see so many people manipulated by the media and those in power.

Thank you for sharing that! A friend told me a similar story. Her daughter needed to make her bus but my friend felt like they should wait. When they did get to the bus stop, a car had crashed into the place where she would have been waiting! It is true about manipulation and must fight back. Thank you!

Tina, it seems “See” is way ahead of its time. Since this post there has been the threat of a pandemic from China. By the way, guess who WAS going to China in May? Ugh!!! Better to be safe than sorry and my intuition/Third Eye is telling me: there is no chance we will be going!!!! Love the post and will try and see the series and also get back to meditating and using my “sight”. Love you, Lou Lou xxoo
